The essence of Alighieri, the luxury jewellery brand founded by Rosh Mahtani, is rooted in a love of history and an appreciation for antiques. The signature molten, imperfect nature of her pieces has become instantly recognisable, and although new, they resemble time-honoured amulets and talismans – ‘modern heirlooms’ as she fittingly dubbed them. Designed to be passed down through generations, each piece is an antique in the making, so when news broke of Alighieri’s latest venture, a curated antique store, it made total sense.
Launching on 19 May, and nodding towards Dante’s seven circles of the inferno, Alighieri Antiques will launch a curated set of seven pieces on the new moon of every month. Rosh confesses her love for antique hunting in a recent interview with The World of Interiors, in which she shared that she’s a regular at Piazza Santa Croce’s street market in Florence, and that she's unearthed the antiques for sale on her travels, each item chosen for its resonance with her and Alighieri’s identity.
‘Ever since I was a teenager I’ve loved scouring the corners of the world in search of objects, art and treasures from times gone by,’ she explains. ‘As our universe expands into its ninth year of being, it felt like the perfect moment to launch Alighieri Antiques.’
The first set of seven pieces were collected from markets across the globe and include a chiselled wooden sculpture, a carved vessel from Germany, a framed mixed-media painting, a carved ceramic plate, an unframed still-life painting, a set of gilded cups and saucers, and a Florentine mounted tile of Saint Damiano. Tempted to build your own universe with these one-of-a-kind artefacts? They can be purchased both online and in Alighieri’s showroom.
