The Swedish interior design house Svenskt Tenn has unveiled a jubilee textile pattern to mark the start of a year of centenary celebrations. This whimiscal design, a pattern from the mid-20th century, is by the Austrian architect and designer Josef Frank.
Frank’s collaboration with Estrid Ericson, the company’s founder, began in 1934, spanned more than three decades – in fact, it only ended with his death in 1967 – and was prolific. Meanwhile, Svenskt Tenn’s journey from a small pewter workshop in central Stockholm to internationally renowned name has been nothing short of extraordinary. Together Frank and Ericson created a look – vibrant, bold and inviting interiors – that define the firm to this day.
Frank’s distinctive design language, characterised by whimsical patterns straddling fantasy and the figurative, takes centre stage as Svenskt Tenn unveils the ‘Est. 1924’ textile design. This pattern, dating to 1949 to 1950, is inspired by Stockholm’s streetscape and has been gently tweaked for the centenary.
Both playful and timeless, the design is available as a limited-edition fabric sold by the metre, as well as cushions, a tray and silk scarf. It is produced by British heritage textile printer Standfast & Barracks, which is based in Lancaster and is itself celebrating a centennial milestone in 2024. The jubilee textile is brought to life through a conventional printing technique, a laborious process in which each colour is hand-mixed.
Besides the launch ‘Est. 1924’, myriad celebrations are set to unfold over the course of 2024 and other Frank patterns and furniture will be released for the first time ever. As Svenskt Tenn continues its legacy of innovative design, the centenary becomes a momentous celebration of 100 years’ worth of artistry and interior elegance.
